Effectiveness of the Remediation Conducted by Texaco Petroleum Company Was Proven During the Inspection to Well Yuca-2B

Coca, November 14, 2006 - Judicial Inspections recommenced today at Well Yuca-2B, which, since 1992, is an inactive oil production site and exclusively belonging to Petroecuador. This is the first time an Inspection has been conducted south of the Napo River since the beginning of the environmental lawsuit filed against Chevron.

During the Inspection, Germán Yánez, President of the Superior Court of Nueva Loja, verified the remediation works conducted by Texaco Petroleum Company (Texpet) at this site. According to the Environmental Remediation Action Plan, Texpet remediated two pits through the in-situ soil stabilization process. The surface of the platform, an area which had been mainly affected by Petroecuador's operations, was also remediated by the same in-situ soil stabilization process.

The Ecuadorian Government approved the remediation works and legally exempted Texpet from any obligation, responsibility, and future claims for the environmental conditions of Yuca-2B. Petroecuador, the majority partner in the Consortium, assumed the responsibility for any pending environmental remediation works to be conducted in oil facilities belonging to the former Consortium.

Chevron's lawyers provided several documents regarding the spills taken place on April 1995 and November 2004. They also presented the Court with evidence of the reconditioning works performed by Petroecuador at the well. Adolfo Callejas, Chevron's counsel declared, "Since this well has been under Petroecuador's exclusive administration for the past 14 years, the State owned Oil Company is legally responsible for any remaining hydrocarbon contamination which may be found in the area."
