Statement on the Government of Ecuador's Press Release Regarding the Lago Agrio Case

Quito, Ecuador and San Ramon, Calif.-- March 20, 2007 - The office of Ecuador's President Raphael Correa issued a press release today commenting about the environmental lawsuit currently underway in Ecuador. In response, Chevron issued the following statement:

"The evidence in the case demonstrates that Texaco complied with its obligations and successfully remediated its share of the oil operations in the Oriente. The people of the Oriente face no significant oil-related health risk from the areas remediated by Texaco.

"The plaintiffs' lawyers continue to flaunt the legal process in Ecuador and rely more on junk science than the technical record.

"After the remediation was shown to be successful, the Government of Ecuador released Texaco of any environmental liabilities. We believe the Government of Ecuador should comply with its contractual obligations.

"The evidence speaks for itself. Specifically, more than 99 percent of all soil samples collected from Texaco-remediated areas confirm that the remediation was effective and complied with the closure requirements set by the Government of Ecuador. As well, more than 99 percent of all drinking water tested is free of harmful levels of petroleum related chemicals, exceeding World Health Organization and USEPA standards."
