Road Safety Initiative
Chevron initiated the corporate project Arrive Alive to attempt to improve road safety in the communities in which Chevron operates. To improve the safety of our workers, their families, and everyone in the community, Chevron representatives are collaborating with other members of the community and local governments to address road safety challenges through the formation of and participation in a non-profit Road Safety organization.

Potential collaborators include non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, and members of the private sector such as insurance, banking, transportation, media, telecommunications, and food industries.

In Nigeria, for instance, the non-profit organization in which Chevron is a member is called the Arrive Alive Safety Initiative and it is now commencing activity.

Why Focus on Road Safety?
Death and serious injury on the road have become a global epidemic. Worldwide, there are more than 3,200 fatalities every day related to road traffic incidents. Those most at risk include children and other pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

The Road Safety Crisis
Road safety is a growing concern in each of four countries participating in the Chevron Arrive Alive project: Guatemala, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. Issues in each country that affect road safety include the rough condition of the road, the inadequate enforcement of traffic laws, and unsafe driver behaviors.

Take Nigeria, for example. The most populous African country, the capital city of Lagos houses over 10 percent of Nigeria's population (12 million), has 5 percent of the nation's roadways, but 35 percent of the nation's traffic, which creates major congestion. In 2004, nation-wide, the number of people killed on Nigerian roadways was 5,000. This number increased dramatically to 16,000 in 2005.

Some Day-to-Day Realities in Nigeria

  • Pedestrians often walk amongst the moving vehicles on the roads in order to sell their wares.
  • Pubic transport vehicles are overcrowded; carrying more passengers than the vehicle is safely equipped to carry.
  • Many roads exhibit massive congestion due to heavy traffic from road users coupled with inadequate road conditions.

The Opportunity
Significant traffic hazards exist in many of the countries where Chevron operates. However, there are proven solutions to improve road safety. Road safety has improved in developed countries over the last 50 years. By taking the learnings from these countries and implementing proven concepts in the developing countries, the Road Safety Initiatives can make a positive impact. Collaboration with the private and public sectors at a community level can impact the improvement road safety conditions.

The Road Safety Initiatives in each location have developed specific action plans aimed to address the root causes of road traffic incidents in each country of focus. These actions were developed by taking a holistic approach, thus addressing road safety issues from multiple angles, reaching both pedestrians and drivers.

A Common Goal
People all depend on the road traffic system in order to function on a daily basis. Communities will benefit from improving the safety of road traffic systems. The non-profit Road Safety organizations seek to build on this common premise to develop a collaborative community of members who are committed to effecting change.
